» Wine Selection Criteria
Less than .1 % of all wine is considered Investment Grade and of those 85-90% are produced in France. Wine-i narrows the even further rating each potential investment for 8 Criteria.
- Recognizable “Terrior”: Great wines and great wine investments start with the best vineyard environments which impart recognizable characteristics.
- Historical Success of Producer: Invest only in wines from producers recognized as luxury brands from proven track records for quality and price appreciation.
- Aging Potential: Investment Grade wine must have the potential to improve and maintain quality for a minimum of 25 years.
- Limited Production / Supply: Investment Grade wines come from initial productions of less than 20,000 cases. The smaller the supply the greater potential for higher prices but not always the best return.
- Vintage: Investment grade vintages occur only 1-3 times in a decade with the most extraordinary wines with the highest appreciation potential coming from only 3-5 vintages in any 50 year period.
- Critics Ratings: Accurate or not, ratings from Robert Parker and a few others determine the investment potential of most wines. Wine-i primarily selects Investments from wines with 96-100 point ratings.
- Regional Liquidity: Asia has unique and localized demand preferences for specific Investment Grade wines that differs from the EU, UK, US and other Markets.
- Provenance and Condition: Invest only in wines with documented proper storage and authenticity as well as pristine condition.
» Purchasing / Buy At A Discount To Market
- Access to $500 million in Inventory from network of over 100 reputable wholesale suppliers worldwide. Wine-i does not buy from traditional Singapore suppliers such as Bordeaux Negociants which tend to keep prices inflated.
- Purchases made below wholesale by taking advantage of cash flow needs of suppliers and differences in regional demand for specific wines. Currency rates are also a major consideration and worldwide supply allows Wine-i to buy from source with weakest currency / lowest price at any given time. Savings are passed on to clients.
- Rubicon constantly looking for only Best Buy Values for recommendation to client portfolios. Will not buy unless prices are at or below predetermined entry points.
- Wine-i does not have to buy (or sell to clients) unwanted wines to get Investment Grade gems. Retail shops and other local Wine Investment services don’t have the buying resources and flexibility of Wine-i.
- Investors with Rubicon purchase wine at true wholesale prices (20-40% below retail) based on volume. The larger the investment the greater the discount.
- Lowest entry prices not only means greater net returns, but allow clients to sell quickly if necessary without unnecessary loss of capital.
» Entry Timing
- Buy wines just prior to entering to drinking maturity (8-15 years Bordeaux, 6-10 Burgundy ) as supplies will begin an accelerated depletion and prices will increase proportionately. Examples 96, 98,00 Bordeaux and 99, 02 Burgundy.
- Buy fully mature / rare older vintages at a substantial discount to current value. Top mature and “trophy” wines maybe available at a discount from suppliers who are unaware of current market value, have lower local demand or need cash flow and sell at a discount and can still realize a profit due to a long holding period. Examples 82,86,89,90 Bordeaux and 85,90 Burgundy.
- Buy young vintages en premier if exceptional vintage and the allocation quantities and entry pricing are reasonable. Buy on release to 3 years after only for short term trade if at substantial discount to market and small supply is outstripped by current demand. Examples 03,05 Bordeaux and 03,05 Burgundy.

» Exit Strategies
Investing in the best wines at the best price does not yield successful returns without being able to sell through the appropriate venue for the highest net value. Wine-i has access to a range of selling outlets which are selected for the best net return in the appropriate timing for the clients objectives.
Auctions
- The usual selling venue for private collectors can be a viable solution but has many limitations.
- Auctions can have selling expenses that reduce the clients net by over 30%.
- Auctions can take several months until payment is made to clients.
- The wrong Auction at the wrong time is a Buyer’s and not a Seller’s market.
- Wine-i will help clients select the best auction company in the right selling location and timing if the potential for return is justified. Wine-i can help clients negotiate expenses.
New Investment Clients
- Wine-i will not use new Investment clients money to pay older Investment clients returns.
- Only in mutually beneficial and fully disclosed circumstances will Wine-i sell wine between clients. Wine-i will assist clients who wish to trade wines with other Wine-i clients.
Private Client Sales
Rubicon has developed several thousand private clients over the past 6 years of which a portion buy investment grade wines for home collections, gifts and consumption.
Wholesale Distribution
- Wine-i has an established client base of hospitality, retail and broker clients who source investment grade wines.
- Gross prices can be lower than retail and auction results but margins are smaller and turnaround time can be quick resulting in equal or sometimes higher net returns in a shorter time.
Internet Sales
Wine-i is developing several Internet outlets for selling Investment client wines to a regional and international client base. Rubicon Reserve / UOB Platinum wine club / American Express Platinum
Retail Sales
- Full retail is the highest selling price in any given market but prices between markets can vary by as much as 100% or more.
- Traditional brick and mortar retail also has high overhead which can reduce the absolute net selling price.
- Wine-i is developing new Luxury Wine Boutiques for maximizing retail sales but reducing overhead.
» Exit Timing & Reinvestment
When to sell – Selling for the highest net return is more than just having the best venue for buyers. Proper timing is equally important.
- Wine-i monitors and analyzes market trends, conditions and pricing throughout Asia and other major markets to determine both entry and exit points for individual wines and portfolios.
- Wine-i will develop target prices for each wine in the portfolio based on the goals of the client. Clients will be informed when a target is reached and be given an opportunity to sell , hold or consume per their choice.
- Wine-i can not predict market tops or bottoms but focuses on maintaining high rates of return based on fundamentals and not speculation.
Reinvestment
- Wine-i clients can have proceeds from sales automatically reinvested to maximize returns as soon as appropriate portfolio additions are available.
Consumption or Client Selling
- Clients can enjoy consumption of their wines or sell on their own at anytime. (Payment of Duty ,Taxes, Permit and Storage fees maybe required.
